Question: I have a car with a manual transmission that has a modular clutch in it. What is a modular clutch?
A modular clutch is a clutch assembly that comes pre-assembled in one
piece. You still have all the components that you would normally
have like a cover assembly (a.k.a. pressure plate), clutch disc
(a.k.a. driven disc) and flywheel (minus starter ring gear in most
cases). What
makes it "modular" is that the cover assembly is riveted to the
flywheel with the clutch disc captive (and pre-aligned) inside. This
whole assembly is then bolted to a “flex-plate” similar to how a
torque converter is bolted to a flex-plate in an automatic
transmission.
