Austin Cameron and the #16 NAPA AUTO
PARTS/NAPA Belts & Hose team drove away with their
third-straight win in as many races in the NASCAR Grand National
Division, West Series. The most recent race for the Bill
McAnally Racing (BMR) teams was the ‘NAPA 150” at Irwindale
(Calif.) Speedway on July 31st. The #16 NAPA AUTO PARTS team is
now only 15 points out of first in the championship standings as
they seek a fourth series title.
The NAPA team qualified the car in eleventh
of 29 cars entered but was forced to move to the back of the
field before the green flag because of being tardy to driver
introductions. Not discouraged, Cameron and the #16 NAPA Auto
Parts team kept their focus on the lead. Cameron made his way
through the pack and by the half-way break at lap 75, the #16
NAPA AUTO Parts/NAPA Belts & Hose Chevrolet were running in
sixth. At that time Cameron reported to crew chief, Doug George
that there was a mechanical issue with the car. George and the
NAPA team were quick to make the needed repairs before the race
resumed. By lap 107 of the 157 lap race, the team had moved up
to third and had closed in on the race leaders. At lap 148, the
front-runners touched and spun down the front stretch. Cameron
inherited the lead which he held onto with a
green-white-checkered finish.
“We came from the back and beat adversity,”
said Cameron. “With NAPA AUTO PARTS and NAPA Belts & Hose
supporting the team, we wanted to get this win more than
anything. We collected our first victory this season at the
Stockton 99 Speedway and that is where we are heading next.”
Kerry Earnhardt and the #20 NAPA Belts &
Hose/NASCAR Select by NAPA Filters team qualified in 12th on the
outside of row six. At the halfway break, the #20 NAPA Belts &
Hose team were running in eighth. Crew chief, Mario Isola and
the team went to work to make needed adjustments before the race
resumed at lap 76. The third caution of the night came out at
lap 90 and Earnhardt and the #20 NAPA Belts & Hose Chevrolet had
dropped to tenth. The team climbed up to ninth before the
green-white-checkered and finished in seventh. The team jumped
10 positions to 23rd in the point standings and has a goal of
qualifying to compete in the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown at
the end of the season.
“The #20 NAPA Belts & Hose/NASCAR Select by
NAPA Filters Chevrolet car was pretty good,” said Earnhardt. “We
were fast during the first segment and when we came in at the
break, Mario and the team made some adjustments for a little
tightness. We took off for the second half and the car just
continued to get tighter. It was really bad. It wouldn’t
turn in the center of the corners. We were just fighting the
car. When we went to the green-white-checkered, we were able get
a jump on two cars and pick up a couple of spots. When we came
back into the garage, we found out the right rear tire was going
down which was why we couldn’t get back on the gas and turn.
We’re going to go to Stockton, have a great run there and keep
moving on up in points. I have fun on the short-tracks.”
The ‘NAPA 150” will be rebroadcast on SPEED
Channel Saturday, September 11th at noon EST. The next race
event, the “NAPA AUTO PARTS 200 presented by Havoline” will run
at the Stockton 99 Speedway August 14th.
